Sex Pistols as Guitar Hero DLC Coming!

SANTA MONICA, CA – June 5, 2008 – Coming to a console near you, living room rock stars will soon be able to shred to an assortment of new master tracks on Activision, Inc.’s (Nasdaq: ATVI) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock with five new song packs releasing throughout the month of June. Two of the five packs will let gamers rock out with three headline acts from the Isle of Wight festival and tunes from the timeless rock icon, Motörhead.

Reliving one of the most memorable performances of the 2007 Isle of Wight festival, Kasabian’s master recording of “Shoot the Runner” joins 2008 headliners The Sex Pistols and Kaiser Chiefs in the Isle of Wight pack. Available on June 12th, the track pack also features Kaiser Chief’s “I Predict a Riot” which climbed all the way to #9 on the UK Singles Chart. The Sex Pistols, who went into the studio for the first time in 30 years to re-record “Anarchy in the U.K.” specifically for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, round out the track pack with a live rendition of “Problems,” recorded during their 30th anniversary tour stop at Brixton Academy in London.

In anticipation of Motorhead’s new album, on June 5, 2008 players can shred to the band’s legendary hits “We Are the Road Crew,” “Stay Clean” and their first single, the self-titled “Motörhead.”

Both track packs will be available on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION®Store for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system.

NBA 2K9 Cover Athlete

Tomorrow night during game 1 of the NBA finals, 2K will run an ad unveiling the cover athlete for NBA 2K9. I’m not quite sure what’s so significant about this or why anyone would care unless the cover athlete is KG or Kobe. It’s not like there’s a Madden 2K curse either. But hey, whatever generates hoopla right? Also, 2K launched a website that after a lengthy and unnecessary sign up process allows you to guess one of sixteen players who will be the cover. To save yourself the trouble, here’s the list:

Chris Bosh

Baron Davis

Kevin Durant

Kevin Garnett

Andre Iguodala

LeBron James

Yao Ming

Steve Nash

Dirk Nowitzki

Tony Parker

Chris Paul

Paul Pierce

Brandon Roy

Josh Smith

Dwayne Wade

Deron Williams

No Kobe, but 2 worthless Celtics. Officially count me out of the care train for this one.

Xbox Live Spin of Death

Back in January you will remember the terrible network issues that plagued Xbox live and caused many gamer’s new Christmas gift to be rendered half useless. The issues went on for a few weeks and finally cleared themselves out. At the time user’s reported problems loading their dashboards, accessing the marketplace, and even jumping into games. I don’t ever remember receiving a clear cut answer as to what was wrong and what was done to resolve the issue. It seemed to eventually just fix itself. Many believe that at the time the user load for Xbox live was simply too large for the servers to handle all the requests coming in.

Fast forward to last Friday and the release of the Call of Duty 4 maps. The only release since the holiday problems that would be able to reproduce the amount of active traffic present over the holiday period of Xbox live. Though we do not have exact stats as of yet, you know a very large number of people went out and acquired the pack. A funny thing happened over the weekend, I couldn’t access the marketplace or Xbox live at all. I just the white load of death. This issue went on into Sunday for me and it’s pretty well documented across the community.

The interesting questions become, what happened this past weekend? Pure coincidence that Xbox live experienced issues during the release of the Call of Duty 4 map pack? What was done again over the last few months to resolve the load issues over Xbox live? Did Xbox live suffer another load issue? To Microsoft’s credit by Sunday the issues had been resolved but I can’t help but wonder just what the heck happened over the weekend again during what would have been a busy period. This sorts of issues did not begin to creep up until last holiday when live stats boasted of more than 10 million users. Has the service become so popular that maybe even Microsoft has taken a larger bite than even they can chew with the live service?
